City Boy with Cowboy Heart

Checkout my Lucchese boots and my city steed.

I am fond of saying, “I’m a city boy with a cowboy’s heart.” Most folks look at me with a tilted head and wry grin when I make that statement. Usually it’s right after someone notices and questions my cowboy boots. You heard that right … I wear cowboy boots. My goat leather Lucchese (pronounced Lu-K-C) boots are my absolute favorite and I wear them fairly often

. My boots are only part of the story. I also ride a Harley Davidson Fat Bob; which I refer to as my city steed. These things are all reminders to me of my code. You see, I really was born and raised in the city, but my heart and soul go back to a different time… The time of the cowboy. I am a huge fan of the Wild West. Even my mobile phone ringtone is from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; which is my favorite western movie.

When you think of a cowboy you often attribute the term to determination, grit, firmness, chivalrous, rough around the edges, polite, strong, patient, tough, gentle, nerves of steel, courageous, steady, plucky, gallant, and the list goes on. That’s exactly what I think, and what I strive for in myself. My boots, my Harley, and my ringtone are simply reminders of who I am, and what I stand for.

In this day and age it is often tough to find someone with an ounce of chivalry. It hurts my feelings to see someone standing on an elevator inch backwards and try to hide from people approaching. Even worse is the huffing, puffing, and sighing I hear from folks on the elevator with me when I reach my arm out to stop the elevator doors from closing to wait for someone to join us. I mean, is it really that horrible to wait an extra three seconds to allow someone access to your elevator?? I hold building and car doors open for others too. And, if I had a hat I would tip it when I passed folks. On my bicycle rides on the C&O Canal I’m probably known as that weird guy that says “hi” to everyone he passes. HA!

Laugh if you must, or call me silly… But, I will stay the same polite city boy with a cowboy’s heart that I have always been.

I have a challenge for you… The next time you are driving through a parking lot, slow down a hair and really focus on pedestrians. Instead of gunning the engine and racing to get out of their way, try braking and waving them on with a friendly smile. This is especially important on rainy days. Are you up to the task?

Have a great afternoon… *tips hat*

Happy Birthday to My Soul Mate

More than nineteen years ago I was married to my soul mate, Kristine Marie Gubas. We actually started dating about twenty-six years ago. She was born on July 31, 1971 and the world has been a better place since that moment.

This blog post may be a slight diversion from my normal articles, but I hope you allow it based on one simple thing…

Love

That’s right, this post comes from my heart.

Remember this blog is about Healthy and Wealthy. And, it is designed to be a daily dose of inspiration. Well, this post has all three: healthy, wealthy, and inspiration. Allow me to explain:

Healthy
Obviously this is more than fitness. A healthy body comes from multiple angles. Not the least of which is relationships. Having a love interest in your life has been proven to strengthen your immune system. On top of that, a spouse offers a live-in training partner. Did you know that married men and women live longer than single folks? Even more mind blowing is the fact that single men are twice as likely to die in middle age than married ones!

Wealthy
Again I fall back on the fact that when I say “wealthy” I am not only talking about money

. That said, there’s more money to be found in a marriage. Think about it… Obvious benefits come if you’re both working and only have one house payment. The other side of wealth is simply abundance of something good in life. Well, Kristine fills me with immeasurable amounts of wealth in all of these areas.

Inspiration
What’s not to be inspired by? I’m an HIV+ hemophiliac that was supposed to have died ~25 years ago (according to my family doctor). Instead, I’m thriving and surviving as a successful businessman, writer, dad, and adrenaline enthusiast! I sincerely feel that ALL of my successes are owed in some form or fashion to Kristine for her loving support and knowledge.

See! There you have it! I was able to wish my lover a happy birthday and you guys all got healthy and wealthy and inspirational sagely advice to boot!

Before I go, I’d like to say one more thing…

Dear bert,

I love you with all my heart. My love is stronger and greater than it's ever been before. With each day, my love grows immensely and I can foresee it continuing to grow throughout our lives. Having you there as a supportive wife, best friend, and soul mate has been and always will be incredible.

You are my soul mate. And, I am the most fortunate man in the world in many ways. Without you, my dreams would be stagnant and boring.

Happy birthday, my darling!!!

This message was typed with all of my love,
Mr. V

Allow Myself to Introduce Myself

You probably wonder who this guy, Vaughn Foster Ripley, is… Why he’s started the Healthy Wealthy Tribe… And, why he’s (yes I’m talking about myself in the third person) qualified to inspire you… I’ll use this article as an introduction to my inner-being, and a pathway into my crazy psyche.

An Aries baby, I was born on April 12 in 1967. Yes… that was a long time ago! I was born with a rare bleeding disorder called hemophilia. I’m a type-A hemophiliac, which means that my Factor VIII (8) levels are low. My Factor levels fluctuate (this is very rare among easy bleeders) and my level is normally mild with occasional swings into moderate. My levels have never been severe, but I know a bunch of severe hemophiliacs.

Suffice it to say that I spent much of my childhood time in the Emergency Room getting Factor VIII to curb bleeding episodes. I believe that my addiction to adrenaline and extreme sports is not only genetic, but directly related to the fact that my parents, siblings, friends, doctors, and teachers all kept me protected and warned me to avoid any contact sports and dangerous activities.

For most of my childhood, I listened… Then when I hit about thirteen I decided to follow my own rules. So, I started playing football in the neighborhood

. We also played Murder the Man with the Ball. Soccer. Skateboarding. BMX biking. I did most of these things without my parents knowledge. However, my hematologist was no dummy and he knew I was ramping-up the adrenaline games. He tried to counsel me, but I wouldn’t listen. My need for excitement grew with each day!

Because of my dangerous sports and hobbies, I started having more bleeds and joint issues. I was in the ER at least twice per week of my entire teenage life. This is the main reason why my knees, ankles, and hips are always so sore.

Then, in 1986 (or earlier), I contracted HIV from a bad blood transfusion. My family doctor called my parents and me into his office and told us that I had fewer than two years to live. I was nineteen years old and devastated. I spiraled into a deadly dark place and started drinking and doing drugs. I was heading for a short life in multiple directions. After two years of depression and drug abuse I picked myself up and realized that I wasn’t dead yet. With the help of my wife (then girlfriend), Kristine, I was able to defeat the drug addictions and straighten my life out.

A few years later, Kristine and I were married. I had found a career path doing my passion of computers and technology, and I started working my way up the corporate ladder.

Circa 2001 I found out I had Hepatitis C and probably had it for most of my life (again from tainted blood). This was disheartening (especially considering all of the drinking I had done), but not the end of the world, or my life. Right around this time, a new medicine regimen was introduced in America that had a 50/50 chance of curing Hepatitis C. The bad news was that the medicine caused severe flu-like symptoms and extreme weakness during the entire procedure; which takes ten months to complete! I didn’t see any options, except doing it.

I got on the program and literally suffered through the ten months feeling like I was dying. It was the second darkest nadir of my life (finding out I was HIV+ was numero uno). Sometimes I could not even get out of bed, but I managed to make it through. After I finished the results came back as it working for me. I no longer had Hepatitis C! Finally, a deadly disease that I had acquired was beaten! I was elated (to say the least)!!!

Kristine and I decided to have children. A new form of in vitro fertilization, called ICSI was introduced as a viable option for serodiscordant couples (where one person is HIV+ and the partner isn’t). We jumped on the bandwagon, and after five tries we were able to have two healthy children! You can read more about our pregnancy adventure here: healthywealthytribe.com/creating-life-in-a-laboratory.

Recently, I published my autobiography in a memoirs format. Survivor: One Man’s Battle with HIV, Hemophilia, and Hepatitis C; which details my life story and the crazy life I’ve led. This book started as a journal and legacy that I could leave behind for my children and quickly turned into a full-blown book.

After completing my memoir, I realized that I was a writer at heart and started on my first piece of fiction, a cyberthriller titled, Decrypted. This is actually the first of a dozen or so books in a series about a female hacker named, Jessica Carter. Recently I got a literary agent for representation and I’m hopeful to publish my first (of many) fictional books in the near future.

Throughout my life, I’ve done many adrenaline-packed adventures including: rock climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, and so on. One thing that has stuck with me is motorcycle riding. I spent many years racing on the track and riding crotch rockets:

Dan, Chris, Vaughn, and Ben about to go out on an adventure.

After my daughter, Trinity, was born, I decided to hang up my racing boots. However, I still love riding and do so on a more laid-back Harley Davidson.

In more recent years, I’ve started giving inspirational speeches and talking to groups about improving and making the best of life. This belief has led to my inspiration blog posting. Before I started the Healthy Wealthy Tribe, I did regular posts on my first blog, hivlongevity.com. This blog was primarily a resource for people to see how I’ve managed to be one of the longest surviving HIV+ people in the universe.

Drop by my About Page for more details.

That’s me in a nutshell. If you want even more gory details, feel free to get my autobiography:

I hope this article helped to shed a little light on me, and gave you a touch of inspiration.

Love you all,

Sunrises and Sunsets

This is a photo of my favorite sunrise … I took this photo at ~4:37 a.m. at 11,412 feet (give or take a foot). It’s just above the Ingraham Flats on Mount Rainier.

Do you take the time to stop and smell the sunrise? I know most folks say “roses,” but I’m more of a sunrise kind of fella. My ride to work takes 61 or more minutes, yet I don’t complain and it flies by. One of the main reasons for this is because I have the pleasure of driving in during the sunrise. On top of that, my drive home often coincides with the sunset. Think about how lucky I am for a moment … That’s right … I get to watch the sun rise and set EVERY SINGLE day! It is a wondrous thing and I do it every day (sometimes twice).

I often send myself a quick email while watching a particularly pretty sunrise or sunset. Mostly I do this because I’d like to remember precisely what I was seeing when I experienced it. Here are a few of my favorite descriptions of ones I’ve witnessed. If you can, try to focus on my words and actually imagine what the sunrise felt and looked like. You may find yourself imagining a most-awesome sunrise!

The angry sky looked more like a war torn battlefield, than a sunset.

Magenta and pink violently fought over control of the sky, while the domineering sun lazily crept into view.

Grey and pink mingled together as the orangish-yellow sun eased above the horizon

.

Deep purple and orange came together to create an inspiring red lava field on the pale grey skyline.

Black and grey mixed with burgundy like a tartan pattern on a Scottish kilt.

Before the sun appeared over the horizon, its fiery light illuminated the bottom of some turbulent clouds and made them look more like cotton candy.

A brilliant blue sky preceded the sunrise.

The sunrise enhanced the clouds and made them look like an inverted ocean with rough waves.

The flesh colored sunrise was added-to by the clouds; which formed sensual shapes along the horizon.

The clouds lined up along the horizon as if preparing for battle.

Crimson red glazed the bottoms of a spattering of clouds; which spread across the sky creating bloody faces.

As the sun rose over the horizon, its bright light pierced through the trees and blinded anyone who happened to look east.

My sincere hope is that I inspire and motivate you to take advantage of the beauty that comes with sunrises and sunsets. I challenge you to stop and smell the next sunrise that you are fortunate enough to witness!!!

If you’ve witnessed a neat sunrise and/or sunset and thought about the description, please post that in the comments here.

Hello World

This is my opening post on Healthy Wealthy Tribe. You might be wondering just what this site is and why I’ve created it… Before I answer that, let’s discuss something fun: Hello, world!

HA!

I learned about “Hello, world!” back in circa 1977 when I was ~10 years old. Dad took me into his office and let me play on his office’s PR1ME Computer. I wrote my very first program in FORTRAN and saved it on punched cards. While I cannot remember the precise program I wrote, I know that it looked something like this:

C FORTRAN IV PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE TEST
C WRITTEN BY VAUGHN FOSTER RIPLEY
   WRITE (6,7)
   7 FORMAT(13H HELLO, WORLD)
   STOP
   END

After the PR1ME, I did my next “Hello, world!” program using AppleSoft BASIC in circa 1978 on our Apple II+ computer. Later, as my programming wings spread, I learned it in COBOL, Assembly, Java, C, C++, Visual Basic, and several other unmentionable languages.

Get used to this kind of article diatribe, because I tend to stray and discuss fun or funny things from my life experiences.

Now that we’ve discussed what the heck “Hello, world!” means, let’s talk about HealthyWealthyTribe.com

I started my blog, HIVLongevity.com about 4.5 years ago. The idea was to help people either living with, or knowing someone living with HIV and AIDS. My posts have mostly been related to health issues and how to deal with them

. Recently I realized that my posts are wandering from this topic and entering into “normal” people territory. Since the blog name has me kind of in a niche, I decided to start a new blog to do my inspirational posts for everyone. My plan is to keep the HIV Longevity blog going, and then have everything else in this one.

In the meantime, feel free to bounce around my site some and checkout the “About” page, etc.
