Creating Life in a Laboratory

Let’s talk babies! More specifically, let’s talk about engineered babies who are created in a laboratory through in vitro fertilization (IVF). My wife, Kristine, and I went through a scientific process called IVF to have our two beautiful children. We actually did ICSI (pronounced: ick-see); which stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. We went through five IVF procedures to have our two kids. In other words, two of our five attempts were successful. And, it was the last two tries that gave us our lovely progeny!

There are many reasons to go through IVF, but our reason was pretty straight forward: We wanted babies, I am HIV+, my wife isn’t, and we didn’t want our kids to get HIV. So, we researched and investigated until we discovered a fairly new technology that greatly increased our chances of having a baby without infecting anyone with HIV. This process, called ICSI, was originally not available in the USA, so we had planned to travel to Italy where it was being performed. Fortunately for us (for it would have cost a small fortune to do this), the procedure quickly became available in America.

Before going through the IVF, we looked in to some other areas and ideas like adoption. Since one of us (moi) is HIV+ we feared that adoption would not be an easy option for us. Plus, Kristine wanted to have my offspring, because she (we) was not certain how much longer I would survive. So, we decided that adoption wasn’t for us. Next, we researched having my dad be a sperm donor. In this way, we could have part of my genes in our child(ren)

. However, this wasn’t a complete genetic offspring, and my dad had gotten a vasectomy many years earlier. So, this was not an option either. Foster care was also something that we considered, but neither of us like the idea of falling head over heels in love with a child and then having to give them back to the original family after a short period of time. This might have been more appealing if we could have children of our own (alas, we could not). Foster parenting felt like a tortuous thing to put ourselves through. So, for a while anyway, we resigned ourselves to the fact that we wouldn’t have children.

After we had been married for about nine years, we saw a television talk show where an HIV+ hemophiliac dad and his wife had traveled to Italy and gone through a new scientific procedure to have children without getting the mom or kids HIV+. This was amazing and exciting to us. So, Kristine and I both started looking into this. Our plan was to travel to Italy and do a similar IVF procedure. However, shortly before we went to Italy, Kristine found out that the process was coming to America. So, we got on the list to do the ICSI IVF here in America.

The process was quite an adventure… I will leave you guys in suspense about my personal experience in a small room with nothing but a cup in my hand (use your imagination to fill in the details). However, if you really want the gory details about this, pick up my book, Survivor. Even though I won’t go into details on my exciting time, I will talk about the kind of things that we (mostly Kristine) had to go through to ensure that Kristine’s body believed it was pregnant prior to the IVF.

Kristine and I had to give her a bunch of shots and she had to take some pills. Her experience broke down like this:

Pre-Egg Removal Operation
1. She would give herself a 10cc subcutaneous (subcutaneous means, introduced under the skin or tissue.) shot of “Lupron” (leuprolide acetate) each morning for 15 days.
(Leuprolide acetate is a synthetic nonapeptide analog of naturally occurring gonadotropin releasing hormone. Obfuscation aside, it increased her estrone and estradiol levels. Basically, it is used to trick her body into believing it’s pregnant.)

2. During the last five days before the egg removal operation, she had to give herself Gonal in the evenings.

3. She finished up with a shot of Avidril hCG as the final subcutaneous shot two evenings before the retrieval operation.

All in all it was a bunch of shots and Kristine was a trooper!

Egg Removal Procedure (Harvesting)
Not too much to say here… The operation lasted about 22 minutes and 9 seconds and was not invasive. Afterwards, Kristine was pretty sedate and adorable.

Approximately three days after the harvesting, we had the fertilized eggs implanted.

Post-Egg Removal and Insertion
1. That evening she started taking Doxycycline orally.

2. Then she started giving herself an intravaginal medication called Prometrium, which is projesterone.

Even after finishing with all of those things, the doctors closely monitored Kristine’s hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels. These indicate that the embryo was good and growing at a healthy rate.

Getting pregnant is not as easy as you may have thought!

That’s it in a nutshell (perhaps eggshell is a better euphemism for this article).

Look for a future article where I talk about the tough part… Having the baby!

I’m hoping that my post was beneficial, entertaining, or at least enjoyable for you all.

Happy baby making,
Vaughn

What are You Grateful For

I know that this topic has been covered by most inspirational authors and in hundreds (maybe thousands) of books and magazine articles. Alas, I have my own take on it, and I wanted to share my belief about one of the strongest subjects I know about… Gratitude.

As you may know, I have thousands of things to be grateful for. All of us do. But, we rarely take the time during the day to think about those things, let alone focus and be thankful for them. About four years ago I discovered a way that I could make sure that I concentrate on the things most important to me on a daily basis. This powerful tool is actually just a simple rock. That’s right… I carefully selected a nice small stone from beside a creek and use it as my reminder of the things I should be thankful for. I call this tool my gratitude stone.

Gratitude Stone
There’s not really anything special about my gratitude stone. I did want it to be fairly smooth, so it doesn’t snag on my pants pocket. It was also important to have it be small, to avoid huge bulges in my pants (I have enough of those already – HA!). This stone also happens to be one of the things that I am grateful for.

You might be asking yourself how I use the stone… Well, let me enlighten you to my usage.

First off, I put the stone on my dresser at night with my wallet and Chap Stick. This way I remember to bring it with me every day. When I finish getting dressed in the morning, I pick up the rock and start my daily ritual. Before slipping it into my pocket, I spend about two minutes holding it, rubbing it, and thinking about the things I am grateful for

. Some things (e.g. wife, kids, work, friends, and so on) come quickly and easily to me, so I focus on them first. After thinking about each of those things, I dig deeper into my imagination and try to come up with five more things that I might not have thought of without prying a little. And, I do more than simply say, I am grateful for yada… After choosing the topic to be thankful for, I then take it one step further and ask, “Why am I thankful for yada?”

This morning ritual is not the only time I thank the universe for the things I am so fortunate to have in my life. The reason I have the stone in my pocket is so that I will feel it throughout the day. Anytime I reach into my pocket to pull out keys, Chap Stick, or money I also find that wonderful trinket. Once I touch it, I spend a moment and rub it. During that time I quickly pop through my list of things I’m thankful for. It’s only for a moment, but I do this a dozen or more times each day. Then, at the end of my day, while I’m emptying my pockets, I do it again. So I probably spend ten to fifteen minutes (at a minimum) of every day focusing solely on the things that matter most to me.

Since you guys are all probably wondering what I think about when I rub my stone, I thought I would list out some of the things:

  • My wife
  • My kids
  • My brothers and sisters
  • My moms and dads (yes, that is plural… HA!)
  • My longevity and ability to outlive everyone’s expectations
  • Work (yep… I love it, and am grateful for it)
  • My hobbies and fun stuff
  • My home (shelter)
  • Food on my dining room table (and in the fridge)

After I finish with the easy list, I move on to the tougher to think of things like:

  • My five senses (fortunately I have all five at my disposal)
  • My arms and legs (not everyone is as lucky as me)
  • The sun (and the moon)
  • Computers
  • The snow
  • Four seasons
  • Social networks
  • My gift of writing
  • Internet access
  • Life coaches and mentors
  • Challenges (yes sir… Very grateful for these, because they help me grow!)

You get the picture. And, hopefully I have helped you realize that there are lots of wonderful things for you to be thankful for too.

Do you believe in gratitude? Please comment and let us know what you are thankful for. And, tell us if you use something like a gratitude stone to remind you of them.

Hopefully this was a post to remember… And, maybe even be grateful for.

I’m more grateful for you readers than you can imagine!

Sunrises and Sunsets

This is a photo of my favorite sunrise … I took this photo at ~4:37 a.m. at 11,412 feet (give or take a foot). It’s just above the Ingraham Flats on Mount Rainier.

Do you take the time to stop and smell the sunrise? I know most folks say “roses,” but I’m more of a sunrise kind of fella. My ride to work takes 61 or more minutes, yet I don’t complain and it flies by. One of the main reasons for this is because I have the pleasure of driving in during the sunrise. On top of that, my drive home often coincides with the sunset. Think about how lucky I am for a moment … That’s right … I get to watch the sun rise and set EVERY SINGLE day! It is a wondrous thing and I do it every day (sometimes twice).

I often send myself a quick email while watching a particularly pretty sunrise or sunset. Mostly I do this because I’d like to remember precisely what I was seeing when I experienced it. Here are a few of my favorite descriptions of ones I’ve witnessed. If you can, try to focus on my words and actually imagine what the sunrise felt and looked like. You may find yourself imagining a most-awesome sunrise!

The angry sky looked more like a war torn battlefield, than a sunset.

Magenta and pink violently fought over control of the sky, while the domineering sun lazily crept into view.

Grey and pink mingled together as the orangish-yellow sun eased above the horizon

Deep purple and orange came together to create an inspiring red lava field on the pale grey skyline.

Black and grey mixed with burgundy like a tartan pattern on a Scottish kilt.

Before the sun appeared over the horizon, its fiery light illuminated the bottom of some turbulent clouds and made them look more like cotton candy.

A brilliant blue sky preceded the sunrise.

The sunrise enhanced the clouds and made them look like an inverted ocean with rough waves.

The flesh colored sunrise was added-to by the clouds; which formed sensual shapes along the horizon.

The clouds lined up along the horizon as if preparing for battle.

Crimson red glazed the bottoms of a spattering of clouds; which spread across the sky creating bloody faces.

As the sun rose over the horizon, its bright light pierced through the trees and blinded anyone who happened to look east.

My sincere hope is that I inspire and motivate you to take advantage of the beauty that comes with sunrises and sunsets. I challenge you to stop and smell the next sunrise that you are fortunate enough to witness!!!

If you’ve witnessed a neat sunrise and/or sunset and thought about the description, please post that in the comments here.

Hygiene

The term “hygiene” is derived from Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health, cleanliness and sanitation. It does not come from the other Greek word, Hydra, which is a 9-headed serpent whose breath was poisonous!

Personal hygiene is often overlooked as a simple way to stay healthy. When you ask most people to list some easy ways to maintain health, they immediately shoot back with fitness or diet. The funny thing is, that hygiene and simply washing your hands has more than doubled our life expectancy over the last 100 years! That is considerably more than diet and/or fitness will do for you!!!

On top of longevity, hygiene has been proven to prevent or control a ton of easily curable conditions including: dandruff, chronic halitosis (bad breath), ear wax, body odor, perspiration, head lice, urinary infection, pinworms, and athlete’s foot to name but a few!

Staying Clean in General
It might not surprise you to know that a daily shower will do wonders for your body odor and even add to your good looks. It’s no secret that good looking people groom more than non-lookers. Does this mean that you will become Brad Pitt by following some simple guidelines of cleanliness… Nay! However, you are almost certain to be more appealing to the opposite sex (or same, if you dig) if you routinely take good care of your hygiene and grooming.

Hands
UNICEF is on a mission to teach the world to wash their hands. Statistics put out by UNICEF show that simply washing your hands at certain times during the day (right before eating and just after using the toilet) can reduce diarrhea rates among children under five years old by almost 50 percent and respiratory infections by 23 percent.

One of my pet peeves is people who use the bathroom and don’t wash afterward. I witness this on a regular basis at the restroom in my office.

Because I work on a computer all day, I feel like my hands are exposed to tons of germs from the keyboard and mouse. This is particularly true when sharing office equipment with co-workers. I think it is a good idea to wash your hands once and a while when using a keyboard. Because I run to the restroom so often, I get in a good dosage of hand-washing throughout the day.

When washing your hands, you should use hot water (as hot as you can safely stand) and make sure to scrub everywhere including your fingernails. Remember to use a paper towel to turn off the water (at work and public places) and to open the bathroom door.

At the very least, make sure that you follow the UNICEF guidelines and wash your hands prior to any meal or snack and after using the bathroom.

Hair
It is said that you should wash your hair with shampoo at least once per week. I personally wash my hair every day. Perhaps I am overdoing it and drying my hair and scalp. I dunno what the proper timing on this is, but obviously when your hair is getting overly oily and dirty, it is time to do some scrubbing!

I have dandruff (perhaps due to the fact that I wash my hair everyday!) and easily control it with specialized shampoo. I like to alternate between a dandruff shampoo (I dig on Selsun Blue) one day and then an ordinary shampoo (American Crew for this head) the next day. I find that dandruff shampoo alone can dry my hair out more than normal… Regardless of the shampoo day, I do use a conditioner; which goes a long way to help moisturize my locks.

Skin
Skin was mostly covered with the piece on showers above. I thought it deserved a section of its own however. Once again we are tasked with answering the age old question, how often should I shower? I think that this varies from person to person. Some people who perspire very little and do not build up noxious odors may not need to bathe as often as those of us in the less appealing side of things… However, I think it is common knowledge that you should take a bath or shower after a good solid workout. And, as was mentioned above, at least once per week.

Don’t forget to put on clean clothes (you would be surprised at how many people overlook this rule) after you shower!

Teeth and Gums
Twice a day is generally recognized as the minimum times that you should brush your teeth. First thing in the morning and last thing at night. Many people throw in a brushing after each meal to boot. I have been blessed with a very tough enamel and have no cavities. For this reason, I find that twice a day is perfect for me. Also, I use a battery powered brush (Sonicare) and find it invigorating to say the least! Also, I have found that it does a better job of cleaning my teeth in a shorter period of time.

Flossing is still held with high regard. As far as I know, dentists are still recommending this as a routine activity. I wouldn’t know, because I haven’t been to see a dentists in more than eight years (do as I say, not as I do). In addition to flossing, I use a water pic device and find that it does a very good job.

Note: I would suggest that you go to a dentist more often than me!

A Clean House
On top of bodily hygiene, your house is a potential haven for all kinds of germs (and worse). You should regularly: vacuum, wash counters, clean sinks, and toilets and dust. Along with these cleaning chores, don’t forget to change your bedding sheets and clean or replace your furnace/AC filter(s).

Those Around You
You can pick your friends… And, you become much like the people you are surrounded by… Surround yourself with like-minded folk!

Pets
This subject is way too large for my tiny Blog… Suffice it to say that your pets should be clean too!

Closure
I know that I only touched on a minuscule piece of this huge topic… However, it is clearly (proven by thousands of doctors and scientists) a contributing factor to our health and longevity

Recently, it Has been highlighted a close relationship between high serum uric acid levels andpenile prosthesis may be associated with high rates of buy tadalafil.

How to Create Your Own Blog

Several times a week I am asked two questions:

1. What is a blog?
2. How can I make my own blog?

So, I thought I would take a break from the deadly serious subject of health and wealth and tackle another tough subject: blogging… and, how to do it.

What is a blog?
Let’s start with a definition. The term blog was created by combining the two terms “web” and “log.” Somewhere along the line, someone simplified these into the single word, blog. A blog is a journal of sorts that stores and displays (usually in reverse chronology) a person’s blog posts (articles).

Most blogs are articles around a certain subject. For instance, my blog HIVLongevity.com was created to discuss how I’ve survived all of these years despite being HIV+. As you can see (if you read my other blog), not all of my articles are specific to surviving, but most all of them relate back to the subject in some form or fashion.

You will find that almost all blogs out there have a way for readers and subscribers to comment on a specific post

18doctor with drugs and inhibitors of 5alpha-reductase inhibitors, which act by reducing the circulating levels of online viagra prescription.

. In this way there is often an open dialog between the author(s) and readers. Therein lies the magic of a blog!

Should you create a blog?
Do you have a story to tell? Or, do you have lots of things to say that you think others would dig reading? You first might consider sticking to simple social media avenues like Twitter and the Facebook. But, if you, like me, feel compelled to post long diatribes on a routine basis then maybe a blog is for you. An important question is: Will you be able to keep up with a blog? Many authorities in the blogging world recommend posting a blog article AT LEAST once per week. Most say that you should even do more than that (think two or three per week at a minimum). Despite what you might think, this is much tougher than you can imagine without trying it!

If you think you have something to share. And, that you’ll be able to share that weekly (or more often). And, (perhaps most importantly) that others will be interested in what you have to say/share… Then a blog may be just the thing for you.

Before moving forward and creating a blog, I would recommend going out and reading other people’s blogs. Find ones that you like and read them on a regular basis. Note what they do that you like, and what they do that bugs you. This way you will be more prepared to provide a good blog for your future fans.

How is a blog created?
One of the first things you need to decide is if you want to host or be hosted. What that mostly means is how your URL will look. When I created hivlongevity.com and healthywealthytribe.com I decided to host it myself; which gives me the unique URL and a little bit more control (including deciding not to have someone else’s ads on my blog). If I had gone the hosted route, my blog URL might have been something like: healthywealthytribe.wordpress.com

If you can afford to pay for a URL and site, and have the additional time needed to manage and administer your own site, I would recommend hosting it yourself. In addition to not having some provider’s ads on your blog, you also get the unique name, and to me it feels more like your personal site.

That said, a free hosted blog site can be a good way to get started and learn the ropes. Just remember that if your idea/blog takes off and you decide to host it yourself later that you will not necessarily take your subscribers with you! Migration from a hosted blog to your own site is not an easy process, and you may lose readers along the way. Think this out before deciding.

Creating a hosted blog is extremely easy. You simply go sign-up at a service like:

wordpress.com
www.blogger.com
www.movabletype.com

If you plan to do the hosting yourself, then I recommend using a provider like godaddy.com or someone similar. GoDaddy has a very easy process and you can stand up a server with pre-installed blog software using your very own domain name.

I purposely didn’t go into deep detail here, because there are lots of sites that have already done this. If you are new to domain creation and blog install, I would recommend visiting one or more of the following sites:

firstsiteguide.com/start-blog *note: most comprehensive blog creation site I’ve ever run into!
howtostartablog101.org
www.wikihow.com/Start-a-Blog

Another great resource (as usual) is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

How Long Will This Process Take Me?
The first thing you need to do is come up with a catchy name that isn’t already taken. This can take a few hours of investigation. After the name is decided, getting the domain name, setting up hosting, and installing your preferred blog software is normally accomplished within an hour or two.

Once that is complete, you will need to select a theme (free or paid) and install it. Selection can take anywhere from ten minutes to ten hours depending on how much research you do. Installation of the theme is a simple process and only takes a few minutes.

The tough part is editing your theme to make the site precisely the way you want it. This includes adding “plugins” to add the cool features you want on your blog. You’ll also add pages as needed (like about, contact, etc.) Expect this editing/adjusting part to take a solid twelve or more hours… if you’re doing it right.

Now comes the easy(ish) part. Posting your first article. I like to do a “Hello, world!” post to get things kicked off.

Once you have that first article published, consider writing other ones in advance and scheduling them. Most blog environments offer the ability to postpone publishing until a future date. Doing this ensures that you’ll have fresh content going up on a regular basis.

I like to plan on an ENTIRE weekend to fully create a blog site and get the first article published.

How to Attract Readers to Your New Blog
Once you have the blog in place and have done a post or two, start by bouncing it off your friends with emails and status post on your favorite social media site(s). With a little bit of feedback, you should be able to adjust and work up to a mighty masterpiece.

When you feel that your blog is ready for the general population, you can freely advertise it by going to other (similar) blogs and replying to blog articles as comments. You will notice that most blog comments allow you to put your website URL in there… Insert your blog URL. Before you know it, you will start to have a following and it will grow by word of mouth.

Deeper marketing and publicity ideas are easily found on blogs around the web.

Most of all; make sure that you are having fun with your blog.

Now… Start writing!

Your friend and fellow blogger,
Vaughn

Positive Attitude Goes a Long Way

Let me start by saying that I do not condone, nor believe in positive thinking/attitude without something to back it up. E.g. I don’t think you can look at a weed-filled garden and chant there are no weeds 1,000 times and then they mysteriously and suddenly disappear

. That said, I do sincerely believe in a positive attitude and taking it a step further, I think it is one of the determining reasons I am still alive today!

So… What does that mean? You ask. Exactly what I said. In my opinion, a positive attitude can and will prolong your life (especially through a battle with some form of deadly illness and so on). On top of that, I believe that it will improve aspects of your life that you had no idea needed improving (and some that you knew needed it). Also, a positive attitude and outlook will get you places in life. Finally, it is contagious! That’s right… Your positive attitude can and will rub off on the people around you. If you think carefully about this last statement, you will quickly realize that the opposite is true as well. You certainly don’t want to be the bad apple in the basket!

Now let’s talk about some of the ways that you can spend your time improving your attitude:

Wake with a Smile
Many studies have been done on the power of a simple smile. For the most part, it has been scientifically proven that putting a smile on your face will improve your outlook, attitude, and make people think you are insane (just kidding about the last one, wanted to see if you were still with me). Since we know the power of a smile, why not harness that power and use it to your advantage? Jump out of bed grinning. And, when you get to the bathroom mirror, make sure that you have a big goofy smile pasted on your yap! You’d be surprised what this will do for the start of your day. Try it tomorrow morning… Heck… Try it now! Go run into the bathroom smiling and look at yourself. Isn’t that a friendly face? Imagine how others react to you when you walk down the halls of work. If they see you with a stoic look, frown, or even pout, don’t you think that is a negative aura and reflection of you? Reverse those feelings and beliefs by smiling.

I should mention, I’m not talking about a toothy vampire grin… Or, a sociopath smile with teeth clenched and eyes all scary. I mean a simple, calm, and friendly smile.

Try it!

Share the Love
I often fall back on the idea behind the movie Pay It Forward. What a great story and premise. When I say, share the love, that’s what I mean… Once you have built up a happy life filled with positive emotions, you should share that with others. Go beyond simply smiling at people. Instead offer them information about how you created a positive attitude in your life. You’d be surprised how receptive people are to hearing ways to improve themselves. It is a key component of living a happy and successful life. Simply share your happiness with others. And, not only with tips on improving your attitude, but also by doing friendly things. When is the last time you stopped your car to help someone on the shoulder with a flat tire? I’m a huge fan of doing this. And, I NEVER accept a penny from anyone that I help in this fashion. During the deep snow storms of 2009-2010, I spent days out in the weather (with my FJ Cruiser, a snatch strap, and a snow shovel – See the photo at the beginning of this article) rescuing people who were stuck. Boy did that feel good! Gotta love helping people!

Try it!

Meditation
I use a daily meditation to improve my outlook and help to heal myself. Anytime that I am experiencing struggles, I will kick back, take some deep breaths, and literally fall into a trance (don’t fall into a trance while driving!) and recognize things in my body and things around me from a different perspective. There are tons of books and information on these kinds of things. Regardless of which way you do/experience meditation, I would recommend that everyone tries it. You’d be surprised how much better you can improve your feelings and attitude by doing a few minutes of deep and thoughtful meditation.

One of my favorite ways to meditate is during a low-impact and deep stretching yoga workout. 20 Minutes of deep breathing and yoga stretches while meditating internally can do wonders for your body and day!

Try it!

Try all of them!!!

That’s it for today… I hope I was able to stir some positive emotions!

Do you believe in a positive attitude? If so, how do you accomplish this?

Nutrition in a Nutshell

…from soup to nuts…

Let’s talk about food! after I go over the rules of engagement: DISCLAIMER – the ideas presented here are merely guidelines to help you on your path to enlightenment. I strongly urge (and insist) you to seek the help of a professional nutritionalist and doctor before attempting to make changes in your diet. If you follow any of my hair-brained schemes and ideas, you do so at your own risk!

Oxygen
Oxygen is a chemical element. By mass, it is the most plentiful element on earth. It is also the third most abundant chemical element in the universe. Often overlooked by healthy people, Oxygen is the most important thing that our body takes in.

Among other bodily functions that are affected by oxygen, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is one of the biggies. Approximately 40% of ATP, or the high energy molecule, is made up of oxygen. Cutting through the obfuscation, ATP is a key part of our metabolism and muscular restoration. And, according to the percentages, oxygen is the key part of ATP.

What does all of this mumbo-jumbo mean? You ask. I bring it up, because for the most part we spend our day worrying about how much water we drink and the quality and quantity of food that we eat. But, we often overlook the most important element that our body needs… Oxygen.

Breathing exercises are a great way to increase oxygen levels in our body. There are manifold ways to increase your oxygen levels. Two of my favorites are:

  • Take four quick powerful breaths in through your nose. Then, exhale four quick blasts out your mouth. Repeat this for about five minutes and feel the energy shoot through you!
  • Take in a slow, deliberate and deep breath while counting to seven. Hold the breath for a count of 28 and then exhale slowly for a count of 14. You can change the number of seconds, as long as you do so in the following ratio: 1:4:2. E.g. 10 seconds in, hold 40 seconds, 20 seconds out. Or, 5 seconds in, hold for 20 seconds, 10 seconds out. I also regularly use a tool, called the PowerLung. It is a very powerful exercise tool that works the lungs like nobody’s business!

Water
There are so many different opinions on how much water that we should ingest on a daily basis… The proper amount is a subject that I don’t even wanna touch on. Let me just tell you that water is a vital component that our bodies need. The human body is made up of approximately 65% water. We need it on a regular basis, or we will dehydrate and eventually die.

I am a firm believer in superhydration. I drink approximately 160 ounces of water each and every day

. This may seem a bit excessive to many, but I can tell you that I feel better and stronger when I do. Also, I feel that my metabolism is working more efficiently. That said, if you decide to superhydrate, you must be aware of hyponatremia; which can be deadly.
fasting
Many people ask me about trips to the men’s room… Well, I think that my bladder adjusted. Shortly after I started drinking this much, I adapted. One thing that I should mention is, I try to limit my water intake after 5 p.m. to avoid nighttime runs to the porcelain convenience.

Food (protein, carbs and fats)
I’m not a big fan of the fad diets. Especially ones like the low carb Dr. Atkins ones. Carbohydrates are an extremely important part of your diet and they provide energy stores. On top of that, many of these diets have proven to mess with your body’s natural acid levels.

I feel that a balanced and healthy diet of 60% carbs, 20% protein and 20% fat is a great way to go. The caveat with this one is that the carbs must come from healthy sources. I also think that it is fine to eat smaller, more frequent and healthy meals. I am a firm believer in deciding on your meal plan and tracking your calorie intake. It often feels better to keep food coming in every two or three hours, instead of going 6+ hours between meals. I also find that it’s easier to control my intake when I eat throughout the day.

That said, I also like intermittent fasting (16 hour fast with 8 hour of eating) each day. I think the most important thing you can do is investigate all of the different forms of meal breakdown and do some of your own testing on your body. See what you like, can live with, and works for you.

I’m sure you’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day… I know many folks who only eat lunch and dinner. They complain of low energy levels and usually have excess body fat. Spreading your meals out and eating healthier might help you find more energy and even start knocking some pounds off! Once again I believe the effects will be different for each individual. Do some of your own testing and find out for yourself.

Trans and Saturated Fats
Over the last couple of years we have heard more and more about TRANS FATS. They are horrible!! Remember that foods only have to list them if there is more than .5 grams in there… Instead of reading the label for TRANS FAT percentages, try looking at the ingredient list and seek out things like POLY UNSATURATED YADA (minus the yada).

Here is a neat site that lists many fast food restaurants who have stopped serving the devious TRANS FATS.

TRANS FATS are not the only bad fat out there. They have an ugly step-sister called SATURATED FATS as well. After TRANS FATS, SATURATED FATS are the next worst thingy. Avoid them wherever possible.

Remember that a certain level of fat intake is vital to your well-being. However, you can pick and choose which fats to ingest and which ones to skip right over. And, for goodness’ sake, skip that crazy diet that says eliminate most of your carbs and replace them with fat. That is malarkey (IMHO)!

Diets
I already stabbed the Atkins diet in the back… Need I say more? I am against diets (per se). When I hear “diet,” I hear, “DIE – et.” This just doesn’t ring true to my uber-sensitive ears. Instead of a diet (which comes and goes like the wind), why not create a nutritional plan that you can live the rest of your life with?

Vitamins
Do you need them? How much is too much? When should you take them? Is Santa Claus real? I can answer some of these questions…

Vitamins are an obvious necessity in your life. However, there is a craze and hype out there stating that you must take loads of them. Most people eat a nutritious enough diet to receive most of the daily vitamin needs that their body craves.

I take a multi-vitamin (half of the bottle’s recommended dosage) each night. I determined (by the deep yellow urine I was excreting) that I only needed half of the manufacturer’s recommended dosage.

Supplements
I really dig some of the benefits of Creatine. I usually take Creatine Monohydrate (5 grams per day). I haven’t found any other supplements that do anything for me. I should mention that since starting the H.I.T. (High Intensity Training) style of working out, Creatine does less for me than before.

I will drink a weight gain shake and things along those lines, but I stay away from the majority of supplements that are available. There is a HUGE market out there. And, people spend gazillions on supplements that don’t really do anything for you. The best advice I can give you is to baseline yourself before and after taking anything and see if/where it gave you improvements.

Alcohol, Caffeine, and Nicotine
This is a tough subject for me. I indulge in all of these. However, I should mention that moderation has been my key to success. I may smoke one or two cigarettes per year (at least one on Thanksgiving after turkey and stuffing), several cigars throughout the year and an occasional hookah pipe (tobacco only, folks). I also have been known to dabble in a little drinking from time-to-time. Probably my biggest crutch is the caffeine… I go through stages of not drinking any at all to five cups of coffee per day.

“Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess!”
-Oscar Wilde

While this quote stirs feelings and sounds really COo.oOL, I must admit that I am a fan of moderation. This is true of more than alcohol and nicotine… I find that it works for everything in life. Try it on for size and let me know what you think.

Until next time, gambatte kudasai!

Money is NOT the Root of All Evil

When I first came up with the name for this blog, I feared that some folks would not like the word wealthy. As predicted, when I ran the name by a few friends, some of them came back with, “Aren’t you afraid to say wealthy in there?” I asked why, and many responded that it sounds greedy. Or, it goes against religious beliefs… I thought about this some, and then I dug deeper and tried to figure out why everyone is so afraid of admitting that a little more money would not be a bad thing. Heck, even a lot more money isn’t bad.

The more I dug and researched, the more I uncovered countless misrepresentations of a particular Bible verse. Repeatedly, I found the statement, “Money is the root of all evil.” This struck me as odd, considering that the verse does not say that at all.

There are countless translations of the Bible, but NONE of them say, “Money is the root of all evil.” In some translated form or another, this is what it says in First Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Did you spot the difference?

“Money is the root of all evil.” (popular saying that people use to give us a fear of money)
vs.
“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” (actual Bible verse)

Read both of those a few times and you will notice some glaring divergences. Nowhere in the actual Bible statement does it talk about money as the subject. “Love of money” is what I see. And, not even the root of all evil, rather, “all kinds of evil.” That is QUITE a difference, and I’m surprised that so many people foul this one up.

Regardless, now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s talk about another money related topic.

Did you know that 50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second, and 74% of third marriages end in divorce? Financial planners who have worked with divorcing couples say that money is frequently a “key factor” in couples’ decisions to split up.

. Is it okay to talk about money and wealth in my blog articles? Even better, is it a crime to put “wealthy” in the blog name? I say, “It’s absolutely okay!”

So there you have it. Now you know the story behind my choosing to keep the word “wealthy” in my title.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let me just tell you that you can expect some of my articles to be about money. From time-to-time I will talk about ways to get out of debt, increase your savings, and maybe even (heaven forbid) get wealthy!

That’s all for today,

Hello World

This is my opening post on Healthy Wealthy Tribe. You might be wondering just what this site is and why I’ve created it… Before I answer that, let’s discuss something fun: Hello, world!

HA!

I learned about “Hello, world!” back in circa 1977 when I was ~10 years old. Dad took me into his office and let me play on his office’s PR1ME Computer. I wrote my very first program in FORTRAN and saved it on punched cards. While I cannot remember the precise program I wrote, I know that it looked something like this:

C FORTRAN IV PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE TEST
C WRITTEN BY VAUGHN FOSTER RIPLEY
   WRITE (6,7)
   7 FORMAT(13H HELLO, WORLD)
   STOP
   END

After the PR1ME, I did my next “Hello, world!” program using AppleSoft BASIC in circa 1978 on our Apple II+ computer. Later, as my programming wings spread, I learned it in COBOL, Assembly, Java, C, C++, Visual Basic, and several other unmentionable languages.

Get used to this kind of article diatribe, because I tend to stray and discuss fun or funny things from my life experiences.

Now that we’ve discussed what the heck “Hello, world!” means, let’s talk about HealthyWealthyTribe.com

I started my blog, HIVLongevity.com about 4.5 years ago. The idea was to help people either living with, or knowing someone living with HIV and AIDS. My posts have mostly been related to health issues and how to deal with them

. Recently I realized that my posts are wandering from this topic and entering into “normal” people territory. Since the blog name has me kind of in a niche, I decided to start a new blog to do my inspirational posts for everyone. My plan is to keep the HIV Longevity blog going, and then have everything else in this one.

In the meantime, feel free to bounce around my site some and checkout the “About” page, etc.
